If you do install new software - and actually succeed (?) in doing so - where does the software go and how do you start it?
I did (hopefully) install OpenOffice 3.1, but cannot find anywhere an nice icon to click on and thus start the software. All I get is folders upon folders with MANY files that do not do anything. Under Windows I am used to get an icon under "Start" after installing new software.
You should say which version of openSUSE you're running. Generally speaking and for casual users, you don't need to know where things get installed. If the openSUSE team packaged the release, then you can pretty much trust that things go where they're supposed to. For just about every GUI application there's a launcher entry added to your main desktop environment in the way that's consistent with its application launching scheme. As a KDE users, I know only its scheme, which is to organize them into a hierarchy of menus in the so-called "K" menu (which is often branded by a given distribution and by default in recent openSUSE releases shows the openSUSE "geeko".) By default, it's at the left end of the KDE panel which by default is at the bottom of the screen. Click there and you'll see categories of sub-menus on the bottom. move your mouse over "Applications" and you'll see the application categories above. As you might guess, OpenOffice.org is in the Office category. You can open a master OpenOffice launcher by selecting "Office Suite." Also, if you have OOo documents and can see them (their icons) on your desktop or in a file viewer such as Konqueror, you an simply click (or double-click depending on your KDE options) and the appropriate OpenOffice.org module will be launched to open them.
The section "Appliations" does NOT contain a new icon for the new software. So, how do I activate it???
