I am trying to create a vanilla kernel as downloaded from kernel.org
Why?
(2.8.26.10 to booto x86_64 machine from.
Sounds like some experimental kernel to me. I wasn't aware the kernel devs had reached 2.8.0 yet. Newest I've seen mentioned is 2.6.31.
I have all my ops selected, but am running into a sticker -- it comes up but says it is unable to open the system console -- then I get (noname)login:
And no logins work -- I get some security error I believe, root or normal user.
So how is it that I can type on my console, yet linux thinks it can't find or open the console?
it's very wierd. The system console is numbered tty1, though I am unable to switch to any alternate tty's.
I am not using a frame buffer mode.
Maybe if you tried something good would happen. Seriously. Only time I ever don't use framebuffer is troubleshooting apparent framebuffer trouble.
Never seen a kernel come up and not find a conole.
Guess what happens when you try to run a kernel containing a major new feature that has no support infrastructure in userspace. :-)
I've tried putting it on the serial port as well -- but that doesn't seem to work eiher.
How can I be simultaneously typing on a console, but claims it can't open the console?
Very weird....
Get some sleep. Proofread before sending. Google KMS. Install Factory. Try the kernel furnished with Factory in Factory. Then ask on the Factory list or the opensuse kernel list or the linux kernel list if still having the console problem. Users who don't use devel distros probably know little or nothing about KMS. Or maybe you can make it work in 11.1 by compiling with KMS disabled. I compile kernels only when it's unavoidable. That's a rare need that hasn't happened to me in any SUSE in over a year. I'm not up on experimental kernel options. I know little about KMS except it's resulted in several zillion threads on various devel lists. -- "Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle."
