Bob,

        I have an old Dell Dimension (PIII 866) with an NVidia FX5700 Ultra 
that 
works perfectly with an Acer 22" widescreen at 1680x1050 resolution. 
Fantastic use of older hardware. The 5700 drives the display just fine (and 
is actually faster than the recent NVidia 8400GT)

        Widescreen is definitely the way to go. The additional screen 
realestate is 
fantastic. Even working from a framebuffer console (runlevel 3) with frame 
buffer resolution set to 1280x1024 (vga=0x31a) it works great. With any X 
desktop, the NVidia driver will give you native 1680x1050
