do people know a virtual machine software that can improve performance
by making use of a separate harddisk instead of a disk image?

Sorry for posting similar questions twice, but last thread went to the 
discussion of "can a virtual machine use harddisk as harddisk image" even since 
the very first follow-up posts so I think restart another thread with clearer 
question helps.
