Hi Jens,

thanks for bringing this up; this is really kind of a controversial
topic - here's a selection of bug reports dealing with it (which is
also the recommended way to propose something to us):

As it stands, you can argue both ways, and there is a work-around - 
but ultimately we do what our users want, so I just pushed a change
to make OOo 3.1 show the paper orientation checkbox again. ;)
