What Carlos is guessing is that instead of "||" Duaine/Laura entered "!!" instead.
Exactly.
I tried to mistype the command here, but I didn't get a similar result, so I really don't know. Mmm... looking again, I see an exclamation at the end of the original command. Dunno. :-?
Based on the discussion with Randall, it seems that perhaps Cristian is using a csh derivitive where history expansion is disabled inside double quotes, and Duaine is using bash which doesn't. My first attempt to duplicate Duaine's problem resulted in no duplication because I change my default shell to tcsh, and since Cristian didn't specify a shell, I just went with my default. I see that bash does in fact interpret the line as a history expansion.
