In X, one can connect to a remote desktop by using a command such as "X
-query host :1", which will open the remote desktop as display 1. Is
there any method to use the next available number, rather than
explicitly specifying the display number?

In all the reading I have done on remote X, etc. I have run across
information
stating that the *server* (X, vncserver,etc..) will grab the next available
display if not explicitly stated, but I have never run across information
saying a *client* will grab the next available display.
Now, of course, I haven't read everything, and others may know something
different, but that's my cut on the situation;-)
