It worked. It was as you described. the ICEauthority file was owned by root.
I deleted the file and the system starts up without that annoying dialog
box.

I had this error the last time when I called k3b from a remote
system with sudo. The ownership of ~/.ICEauthority got changed to
root and the next application could not open it, access rights
being 600.
