[opensuse] system boots only with openSUSE 11.1 xen kernel

The motherboard is an Intel D945GTP, openSUSE 11.1 (x86) with default,
pae, and xen kernels.

About 15 days or so ago, the system would not boot up if I selected the
default or the pae kernel (grub default). Knoppix LiveDVD kept
throwing up segmentation fault. So I ran memtest and found that one of
the DIMMS failed the memtest. No sweat, replaced it and checked out
the memory. Everything looked good but still it would not boot with
the default/pae kernels. I would get EIP error messages right after
the "/" mount (reiserfs).

However, the system boots with the xen kernel (latest is
2.6.27.19-3.2-xen) so I removed the default and pae kernels from the
installation and re-installed them via Yast2. Still the same behavior.
It starts the boot process and then barfs while mounting /. (NB the
2.6.27.19-3.2-xen kernel is able to mount the / fs.)

Any idea/pointers as to what could be the reason for the above behavior?
