You talk about Wastebin, which is big can for trash on a desktop.
The name of the folder where deleted mail goes in KMail, or KMail component of Kontact, is "trash", not Wastebin. It is located in local folders.
With the en_GB localisation, the name of that folder in kmail is also wastebin
It is English after all. :-D
In KDE 4.2 the command is called "move thread to wastebin" and has the ctrl- del shortcut. "Delete thread" you only see on threads that are already in the wastebin
If that's not in 4.1.x, you might consider filing a bug to get it backported, because I agree that it's a useful feature

Disappearing items can be bug, as it happened to me that certain keyboard and mouse button combination on 5 buttton mouse, sent one mail somewhere. I never reproduced that, nor found email again. It happened in Thunderbird that has very little in common with KMail (maybe). -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
