Hi Ian,

what driver version you use? 
What card? 
Any problems with updates?

The nv driver you can set with 
  sax2 -m 0=nv
from terminal, when xorg is not running. 

Terminal Ctrl-Alt-F2
Login as root
  init 3
  sax2 -m 0=nv
  init 5 && exit
