It's a completely new window manager, as different from kde3 than kde3 from Gnome...
It's not a completely different window manager. It's still the kwin code, just updated. It still has all the kwin features that I love (snapping, "Special Window Settings...", "Special Application Settings..."), plus a few nice desktop effects (transparency, live previews, wobbly). Kicker has been removed, subsumed by the kdesktop replacement. That is quite different, but feature parity has been achieved in 4.2. (Not all the kicker applets have plasma versions, but that's not a problem with plasma itself.)
only; 4.1 was for early adopters.) KDE 4.2 is the first one that really feels like KDE.
frankly I don't see any difference from kde4.0 to kde 4.2. No better. I still can't have the plasmoids fitted where I need them
My plasmoids seem to move and resize properly, at least the ones I've tried. Are you having trouble with one in particular or just as a general rule? Could you be a bit more specific in how you are expecting vs. what you are experiencing?
- I even tried nv and nvidia with little difference,
I'm running the "intel" driver on openSUSE and the "nvidia" driver on Debian. Unfortunately, the "nvidia" driver has not been performing as it should for many months now. I don't notice large performance differences between the two cards, but both are acceptable.
I read all (not much) the doc in the kde wiki and I'm still lost...
I haven't read any. :P Bad me.
What version of kdebase4-workspace do you have?
rpm -q kdebase4-workspace kdebase4-workspace-4.2.0-183.3
Same version here. Can you sent me a screenshot with the blurriness? Also, in System Settings, General tab, Desktop, Desktop Effects component, All Effects tab, what effects do you have enabled?
A lot of the "rewrite" was required for the port to Qt4 and/or Windows. It would have been done independent of any of the pillars.
it should have been much more modular (slowly moving from kde3)
That was (and still is) not possible. Either it works against Qt3 or it works against Qt4. You can't have half of KDE running on Qt3 and half on Qt4. You can have half of KDE running on windows on some not, and that is the current state. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ _/
