Sorry being late getting back to you Jim, but the real world called.
The way I
do it when I need to add a repo from a mirror is just to go to the mirror in
your web browser and get to the place where you see the i586, repodata and ,
x86_64 directories, then either right-click and 'copy link location' or just
cut and paste the address from the browser into the command line like:
zypper ar http://cut&pasted_link
In the links you gave above, if you go there in your browser you get:
[home_dgege_fprint]
name=fprint project (openSUSE_10.3)
type=rpm-md
baseurl=http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/dgege:/fprint/openSUSE_10.3/
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/dgege:/fprint/openSUSE_10.3/repodata/repomd.xml.key
enabled=1
That's the repo data not the address you need. You should have grabbed:
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/home:/dgege:/fprint/openSUSE_10.3/
and done
zypper ar
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/home:/dgege:/fprint/openSUSE_10.3/
drege
That would have added the repo correctly for you ;-)

Dave,
I tried the link you graciously provided and got a list of 5 mirrors, from
which I chose:
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/repositories/home:/dgege:/fprint/openSUSE_10.3/home:dgege:fprint.repo
and
http://widehat.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/dgege:/fprint/openSUSE_10.3/home:dgege:fprint.repo
If I include the "home:dgege:fprint.repo" in the repository path, yast says
the repository cannot be created. Omitting the "home:dgege:fprint.repo" works
as far as configuring the repository, but using either mirror still results
in the original error message. Any other ideas anyone? TIA.
