kde3 version of Quanta does not play well with KDE4
It doesn't? I've had no problem using it since I had KDE 4.0.x installed before I upgraded to 4.1. I've been working on a page w/ Quanta and Geany wiht absolutely no problem what so ever. In fact I don't have a problem w/ 4.1 at all. But maybe that's because I'm a menu based person. Even in MS I don't install desktop icons by default. I've had absolutely no problem whatever with sounds other than configuring Amarok for a second time because I updated when I Shouldn't have. Don't want compiz? Then uninstall it. And shut off the effects that come with it. I'm not sure what you mean by configuring but I've had no problem making it do what I want it to do and navigating around the options. Sounds to me you got something misconfigured w/ sound and Quanta. Of course I don't have near the experience you apparently have, but none the less, I'm having no problems.
