I can normally use my scanner as user, but today, after pluggin it in, I can't. Xsane says that no device was found... but if run it as root, there is no problem.
Regardless which openSUSE version you run, the udev/HAL/hal-resmgr stuff has never worked really reliably.
If you run openSUSE 11.1 the current bug report is https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450351 but it was the same in certain cases all the time in the past since we use the udev/HAL/hal-resmgr stuff.
I use 11.0, but I can't see that report: ] You are not authorized to access bug #450351. which seems weird for a 11.1 report :-?
In particular note https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438867#c3 and https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438867#c5 At some time it has also worked for openSUSE 11.1 but now it seems to fail again - just the usual unstable udev/HAL/hal-resmgr stuff all the time since it exists...
Look: cer@nimrodel:~> getfacl /dev/bus/usb/003/006 getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/bus/usb/003/006 # owner: root # group: lp user::rw- group::rw- other::r-- according to that, I should be able to access... and I can't. Note that I can usually access my scanner with no trouble; but yesterday, and today (I suspend to disk, I do not "halt"), I can't. The problem is usually solved with a reboot, but I'm waiting so that we can learn "why". [ Reading more of the bugzilla ] nimrodel:~ # lshal | grep -i scanner nimrodel:~ # lshal | grep -i epson info.vendor = 'Seiko Epson Corp.' (string) usb_device.vendor = 'Seiko Epson Corp.' (string) usb.vendor = 'Seiko Epson Corp.' (string) Today at least, it is not listed as "scanner". I may try to add myself to group "lp", but I'll wait for feedback.
As workaround access it via the saned (which runs as root)
Yea, I know that one. But this scanner usually works. It is one in a dozen times that it doesn't. I can open a bugzilla if you want... - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
