i just installed the nvidia driver for my graphics card and rebooted.
when i did, i was brought to the command line instead of the desktop.
how do i get the system to load the desktop again and not take me to
the command line?

I'll assume that at some point you have had a running x-server and
work from there.
It would help to know how you installed the driver, was it from an RPM
or using NVIDIA's installer software? While the version of SuSE
shouldn't matter in this case, it can help in problem solving other
issues in the future.

i'm new to opensuse and this problem, so i don't know how to recover.

We'll help, if we can get some info.
