Have just got a system back after a SATA connection snapped off the
M/board. Unfortunately the m/board could not be salvaged and was
replaced with a board with an Intel core 2 Dui processor. The
motherboard chipset
is: Intel 945GC + 1CH7 and its model is the 945GCT-M2/13333 V1.0A.
Having a look on the manufacturers website for the board
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?CategoryID=1&TypeID=32&DetailID=827&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=1&LanID=0
it is noticed that the board does not have a printer LPT port, as I
noted when I tried to connect the parallel cable.

Any PCI card with an LPT port ought to work. The first one I pulled out of
one of my junk boxes just now is a SIIG Galaxy 2L. 94V-O.

Further searching reveals that the 945GCT-M# (v3.0) model does has an
LPT connection. If I cannot get the PC shop to replace the board with
the LPT one, is there a PCI card that is compatible with openSUSE 11.0
that will provide at least 1 LPT port for a HP LaserJet 5L?

I have had a look on the openSUSE HCL as well as on Google for 'pci
parallel card' and have been unable to find anything.

Your help would definitelty be appreciated especially as I have just
spent close to R3500 on updating this box, only to find it is now
short on features.

I think a better long term option for your fine old printer is a JetDirect
card. Most old HP printers can accept them, and printer sharing is easier
with the printer directly on the network. You should be able to find a
compatible one used for cheap somewhere.

Devices that function the same but don't depend on particular models for
compatibility are also available. Just plug the printer's LPT or USB port
into the box, and plug the box into your network.

I keep the LPT ports disabled on all the puters I have that have them.
