But this sounds exactly like QuickBrowsers. At least in kde 3.x, which is
what I am using. Not sure about gnome or kde4.
Create a directory on your desktop (or wherever you like) call it Utilities
(or whatever you like). Create links in that directory to whatever
applications, files, directories, urls, etc. are appropriate.
Drag the folder and drop it on the taskbar. You are prompted to added it as
either
- Add as File Manager URL
- Add as QuickBrowser
Choose QuickBrowser.
If this is what you are looking for, you can then add more QuickBrowsers if
you like.
I hope this helps.

Not too sure - I've had a search for QuickBrowsers and I don't think
I've come across something which would provide what I am talking about.
But thanks for the reference.

But I am talking about a "default" ability of creating a folders into
which you then place individual applications according to the purpose
for which the folder was created. For example, in Windows XP I had
folders - which I then placed in Quick Start - named "Utilities",
"Games", "Multimedia", etc. Applications relevant to the name of the
folder were placed in the appropriate folder. If I wanted a Utility -
eg, a disk defragmenter, or a music file editor - I would bring up
"Utilities" from the QuickStart bar and run the relevant applciation.
