The system started to install all kinds of weird kernel versions (pae, etc.).
So, I think it would be a good idea that after a clean DVD install, the system
automatically pops up a gigantic banner saying:
Go to Yast => Online Update

Which yast application did you try online update or software management?
At first, I used the Software Management application I found in the Start
Menu.
Then I switched to the Command Line tool, zypper.
This the update repository I have
http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.0

Use yast2 online update for system updates software management doesn't
install patches. IIRC there is a zypper update after a clean 11.0 install,
if you use yast2 online update it should update your system properly.
Software management is for adding and removing packages mainly.
