As it happens, I do have the rpm created on 10.3. I install it. Now I run
checkinstall: it suceeds. I can install the new rpm.

Why? Because installing the rpm creates the paths that checkinstall can't. 
Why can't? that's the problem.


To check if "sudo" is the problem, I "su -" to root and run the 
checkinstall command: fails in the same point.
