In both Kubuntu and opensuse I find the same problem. I install the system and everything works fine at first run. But then, I install all the updates, and after rebooting, the audio doesn't work anymore.
Let us know a little more about your system.
What hardware do you have?
What version of opensuse/kde are you installing.
(Sorry, I've only tried Kubuntu in live mode, so have little experience.)
