I bought an Iomega eGo external 160 GB USB hard drive but it is not recognized by my os 11.0 linux only box. I thought it would work like my USB flash drives.
Thanks for all the replies but still no sign of appearing anywhere, including the end of /var/log/messages.
I plugged it into my wife's 4 year old Dell WinXP and it showed up with the right name and size. So I copied a photo and doc file onto it.
Then I plugged the drive into an even older HP which I am using for Ubuntu Studio. The drive showed up with the photo and doc like it should with no install needed. Both old computers have USB 1.0.
Back to my new linux 11.0, the drive light blinks for a while, but nothing shows up anywhere. I have 4 USB connections with 2 flash cards and one HP printer with no problems. All 4 connections work.
You could have said all this the first time, it changes perspective dramatically. If it works on another computer with Linux, then it is recognized by Linux. It may be a hardware problem in your main computer, like a bad cable. Or a desktop problem, as Rajko suggests.
Any more ideas? If not, I will format it on Ubuntu Studio as ext3 and try again.
Don't. That's not the problem. On a terminal, type "dmesg" after plugin the device, see messages there. And/or type "lsusb". Or try with another desktop. kde3/4/gnome. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
