I need help with buying an external HD.
I bought an Iomega eGo external 160 GB USB hard drive but it is not
recognized by my os 11.0 linux only box.

A USB external drive should just open in Konqeror like a usb key.

I have two and that is how they both work.

I thought it would work like my USB flash drives.

Yes. That is correct.

Searching the web I found nothing about drivers but on Hardware4Linux I
found that all Western Digital cards work on linux.

There should be no driver needed. Is the drive ATA/SATA?

TigerDirect has a Western Digital Firewire/USB2.0 combo about the same
size.

Does anyone have a recommendation on this or any other external HD?

Marty
