I tried to empty my trash bin, and I am getting 'access denied' errors on
some items.

what could be going on?

Check your trash and see if you have any directories in there. It could be
that you deleted a directory while running a file manager as root, but with
the environment variables pointing to your user's home directory

Otherwise, it's odd that you get access denied when trying to delete files.
The only permission you need to delete a file is write permission on the
directory it's in, and that should be the same for all files in your trash,
since it's all stored in a single directory.

If the first suggestion didn't pan out, did you recently have a crash? Could
it be that you have a corrupted file system there?
