[opensuse] X configuration on 11 - new laptop

I just replaced one of my Thinkpad systems with a Dell D620 (corporate
change, so I didn't get to pick the hardware). OpenSUSE 11 runs quite
nicely on it, but when it comes to docking, I have some issues.
The D620 has a widescreen display on it, capable of running 1440x900.
Undocked, this works really nicely, and while the different aspect ratio
is taking some getting used to, I'm finding that I like it quite well.
But when I dock the laptop, I'm connecting to an Optiquest Q9 LCD panel
capable of 1280x1024 resolution. I can't seem to come up with the magic
combination that lets the laptop be docked and have the display adjust
either automatically or manually so that I can undock and go back to
1400x900 without a reboot.
I also have a weird issue with the external keyboard - I can't get the
number pad to work, no matter how I configure the keyboard in sax2. The
keyboard ends up being a way of moving the mouse pointer on the screen
rather than entering numbers or moving the cursor in a text area.
One suggestion I received was to see if scpm/sumf would handle this -
that seems to require at least an X session restart, and it claims it
doesn't work well with NetworkManager (though I can't see why it wouldn't
in my case, as everything's dynamic).
Any pointers?
Thanks,
Jim
