Check this line in /boot/grub/menu.lst
gfxmenu (hd0,2)/boot/message
(hd0,2) for GRUB is /dev/sda3 for kernel
/dev/sda3 is my boot partition
Also check do you have file /boot/message .

Some how I installed or upgraded without the graphical boot menu. Is
there a way to get it back without a complete reinstall ?
