I have had a problem with my RTL8111C ethernet controller from the beginning. It intermittently starts up in 1000Mb/sec mode and will not connect with the 100Mb/sec router. I have tried everything I could think of and eventually found that compiling the r8169 driver into the kernel seemed to solve the problem. The problem occurred again on my last boot so I decided to compare the good and bad boot logs. Everything seemed correct except for the revision number for the NIC. The good one said rev 02 and the bad one said rev ff. To follow are the two extracts from the log :- eth0 not working link 1000MBb/s IP address: 127.0.0.2/8 done eth0 device: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
