[opensuse] ati x1800 dual dvi, 30" -2560x1600 and 64 bits

trying a 30" Dell lcd with a Radeon X-1800 (R-520 7100) card in my system.
The main os is the 64 bit version of 10.3, but i also have two "test" install
partitions, currently one is a 32 bit 10.3 and the other a 64 bit 11.0. Out
of the three installs only the 32 bit 10.3 actually plays 2560x1600, the
other two only manage failsafe, lock up hard if anything fglrx is in sax or
if aticonfig is run.
The ati repository was tried first, then a couple of the latest versions not
in the repository yet.
Is anyone running the above card and lcd in a 64 bit system?
if so, what magic did you use?
