thanks, much appreciate the constructive help. Please help finish this. below are the outputs of your suggestions. The strange thing is that wodim only works when the dvd is unmounted. this must be some hal mini-hell mounting snafu that should be resolvable by knowledgeable people!
first, tried -prcap after plugging dvd in and closing the kde "what shall i do with the new dev" popup: ...................... 103-32-sb1:/home/plain # wodim -prcap -dev=/dev/sr0 Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying in 1 second. Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying in 1 second. Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying in 1 second. Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... retrying in 1 second. Error trying to open /dev/sr0 exclusively (Device or resource busy)... giving up. WARNING: /dev/sr0 seems to be mounted! wodim: Device or resource busy. Cannot open SCSI driver! For possible targets try 'wodim --devices' or 'wodim -scanbus'. For possible transport specifiers try 'wodim dev=help'. For IDE/ATAPI devices configuration, see the file README.ATAPI.setup from the wodim documentation. ............ second, after *unmounting* the device wodim read it as follows:
Ok, so what you have to do is to tell your desktop to do NOTHING when you insert a DVD via USB. Maybe you have to disable all actions for insert USB disks. I don't remember how to do that in KDE; somebody else might. If that is impossible, you might have more luck using gnome, or one of the other desktops that do not automate mounting (you can call k3b from there). You can manually umount the device, but as soon as you start burning it will detect that there is a dvd that could perhaps be mounted, try to mount it, and crash! k3b burning session goes to hell. Its just an hypothesis. Try to open a bugzilla with Novell instead, with 11.0 if possible. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
