Yep. I hear you. My UNIX Mac OS X laptop has been totally infested with virus files since OS X started grabbing so much of the desktop market. ;D
The main reason for all these Windows virus infestations is due to the Windows scripting engine and how Windows programs handle files.
I'm not say that UNIX/Linux desktops won't have issues with the cyclones of air between the keyboard and the chair just click, click, clicking on things but if the apps and os themselves have intelligence built into them to at least punch the user in the face with a warning that what they're doing isn't such a good idea .. we won't face near what the Wintendo crowd does. We won't get infested just by having the damn things on a network.
Possibly, but are you willing to bet on that to the point of saying that protection is *totally* unnecessary?
I'm not. I'd rather have a good AV solution that includes on-demand access and not need it than not have one and need one.
It's kinda like car insurance. You hope you never need to use it, but if you're in an accident, you are glad that you paid the premium.
No, I'm not saying you should go unprotected. You can do as you wish to do. That's fine with me. But for me to run a process that scans everything and at this point isn't needed just because others use a system that needs that kind of baby sitting is just well .. retarded. There are no self-spreading UNIX virus' out there. When there are I will be happy to use a virus scanner just as I use one on the XP driven IBM Thinkpad I have. I use AV on it even though it's just used for manipulating my Blackberry .. Windows needs an AV. I think in the last 5 years since I've had my Macbook and/or Powerbooks I've never had the misfortune of being so stupid that I've sent an .exe file to anyone .. I would be quite surprised to find a .exe file on a system that uses .dmg or .pkg files. And prior to my main laptop being a Mac .. never had a Linux mail client go nuts and auto send mail with .exe files .. nor postfix, EXIM or Sendmail. What I do is good for me. What others choose to do is good for them. :D - Ben -- "Gratitude is merely the secret hope of further favors." -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
