Sure and I make backups. But if I make backups of an infected file, the backups don't really help me, do they? I personally think the lack of Linux viruses is overblown - sure, there aren't many out there, and they are hard to catch, but that doesn't mean that there's no point in protecting yourself. If you run WINE, for example, now your machine is somewhat more susceptible. I can't run Norton Anti Virus under WINE, though, so something's got to be available to protect the system to any potential exposure.
