[opensuse] Sound problems as user on OpenSuse 11 VM

My son liked some of the games I have on suse. So I installed OpenSuse
11 in a VM using VMWare's free server. I then put VMWare Player 2.x on
his machine. I guess OpenSuse 11 recognizes VMWare, because it
automatically installed open-vm-tools. Everything is working well so far
except sound. I can go to the Devices/Sound either as root or as the
user account and can play test sounds just fine, but I get no sound in
any games. I installed vlc and was able to play an mp3 fine as a normal
user.
If I su to root and play games sound works.
Any ideas?
