I have had similar problems with hotels. Are you ever instructed to open your browser, where it goes to some hotel portal? You enter your room number, then it connects. Just a thought.I have an interesting experience with one of those. Every year, my company has a presentation at a ski resort, north of Montreal. We're there for about 3 days. That place wants $14/day for internet access, but I've found that even without arranging for that, I can use my VPN (either PPTP to the office or OpenVPN to my home network) and then get internet access that way.
