Is this home network or corporate?
Is gerver a Windows machine (and if so which Windows version) or a Samba
box?
Are you in charge of it?
It's a server in our student flat . I have no physical access to it. It's running linux.
If the answer to the last question is no, I would suggest using dig (or
possibly ping) but if this a workgroup based setup the machine/server
name could have absolutely no relationship to the IP based hostname.
Simplest thing is to try ....

ping gerver
>ping gerver
ping: unknown host gerver
>ping //gerver
ping: unknown host //gerver
and see what you have, or ask whoever is in charge of the machine.
If the answer is yes then go to the machine and check the current
network settings.
I asked around and found the ip address. mount -t cifs //172.20.01.100/film /mnt/gerver/film/ now works. Strange that in 10.3 I could use it's name instead of it's IP.
Thanks for your help!
