Can you burn a cd but not a dvd?

My solution is similar to hanging chicken bones but it worked for me. After 
days of trying all kinds of things and making many coasters, out of 
curiosity/desperation I booted into root and tried running k3b and it 
surprisingly completed a dvd burn.  So then I went back to user and it has 
been working ever since!    Yes, I had tried changing permissions and all the 
other stuff like reinstalling growisofs, etc., and nothing worked.  Besides, 
what do you have to lose?? If it works then you can try to figure out why,
