[opensuse] GeForce 6200oc and SuSE 11.0 doesn't work

After installing SuSE 11.0, the first time X comes up the screen is in
solid black and white areas. The cursor is a large rectangle and the
keyboard seems completely disabled. The keyboard LEDs do not respond to
shift and keypad lock changes. I can't CTRL-ALT-DELETE or
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE out.
After hard rebooting to init level 3 and installing the nvidia drivers
(with yast) and I try to just test the new setup I get a failure to load
of "nvidia" and the same thing. No way out. If (after I reboot) I try
to modprobe nvidia, I get a comment about no such hardware. The log
file does not help.
Trying the free nvidia drivers I get the same broken server.
My setup works fine with SuSE 10.3 and the latest Ubuntu.
Google searches don't seem to help.
