There is also zypper clean which wipes out everything including any downloaded rpms kept through keeppackages=1.

So you can "keeppackages" with zypper, great. That was the one feature of Smart I cant live without.
Where do you set this feature?

Manne

When you create a repo using zypper ar -k repourl it will automatically do it. You can also edit the .repo files in /etc/zypp/repos.d/ and set keeppackages=1. The files are kept in /var/cache/zypp/packages/ under the name of the repository they were downloaded to. I have my own local reposiories created with createrepo and I periodically move the rpms to them.
