I've experienced the same problem a while ago (not sure about the version I had then as I was using factory) with gmail IMAP and every time I have attempted to use Tbird for novell newsgroups it has slowed down and eventually locked when downloading message bodies. If I remember correctly my gmail IMAP lockup also happened when downloading message bodies. I used popmail instead and forgot about the problem. Maybe we have found a bug, does your lockup happen when downloading message bodies and have you tried newsgroups? My last newsgroup problem was recent.
