This all on a machine that used to work flawlessly with the touchpad
and Atheros wireless with 10.3/KDE3.
Neither WLAN nor touchpad have anything to do with KDE (other than that
the touchpad is an input device for X11). So installing xfce will have
as much effect as KDE3: none.
This is a kernel issue, not a desktop one.
