Actually, I don't believe so. Since the kernel is already loaded, you
can probably boot the system, but none of the modules will load
properly because you are using the wrong kernel. That can cause a
problem if you need stuff like networking and stuff.

with 10.3 it works. however the bug is closed with a link to this

Use http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ if you broke your grub. It's made for that
job and we decided not to support this any longer.

I still think it a bad idea to stop this, when there is a problem one is often not able to dl anything

anyway, write these reference anywhere and dl the cd asap...
