First guess is that wireless driver doesn't load.
Try in console as root:
lsmod
to see what driver is loaded (if any). It should be something like ipw3945
or iwl3945.
OK. It doesn't load.
Can you try manually to load driver:
modprobe ipw3945
If it is possible you can try to run YaST
yast2 lan&
If ipw3945 fails try the other one.

Huh! Well, there's a thing. The modprobe ipw3945 worked a treat. All I have to
do now, is try to make sure it stays there on reboot, but frankly, if I have to
type that every time I start up, at least I'll be able to use it on my upcoming
trip (starting tomorrow).
I'll play with getting it permanent for a while, and ask again if I fail.
Many thanks for your help, it's _much_ appreciated :)
Cheers,
Simon
