It was indeed the missing firmware. Thanks for the hint.

Here's what induced the error. Before using SuSE, I've always been using the
drivers directly from http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com, and I even maintained
the rt61 Slackware package (well: the SlackBuild script) for slackbuilds.org.
Now this package comes *with* the firmware. No need to download extra
files, 'make install' installs the relevant *.bin files in
$INSTALLDIR/lib/firmware. I just assumed the driver I downloaded already had
the firmware included. Result: hours of hairpulling, when a
simple 'ls /lib/firmware' could have shown what was wrong.
