I was previously using the on-board video card on the CRT with 800x600 without any issues. When I try the LCDs suggested setting of 1680x1050, or any resolution on the same motherboard, the boot and splash screen look fine and fill the whole screen in the correct proportions but the logon screen has about 4pt text on the login screen that is 2cm smaller than the LCD allows i.e. login screen is smaller than available LCD desktop space but the login screen cannot be enlarged to fit the LCD size. Ctrl-Alt-+ just magnifies it all. I am just surviving on 800+600 but all the system text is 4pt size.
Running init 1 and then running sax2 doesn't help as once the resolution is selected even if the same as current, the 'test' screen does not allow movement or sizing of the desktop.
I have consulted the HCL on opensuse, and added an entry into the monitors regarding the 2232 not working on 10.2.
It has been suggested that I update from 10.2 to a more recent release as the updated version would probably cater for the wide screen monitors. Given that 11.0 is 14 days away, I'll probably hook up the CRT till then and wait.
The BIG question is: Does 11.0 support the Samsung SyncMaster 2232GW?
In theory I could update the X files to a more recent release but having never compiled and installed, fewer things are scarier on a production IMAP system storing critical email and docuHi,
I use this monitor with a NVidia card and use nvidia-settings to setup the resolution at 1680 x 1050.
Have since found out that the on-board video of the Intel 865G cannot handle wide screen monitors without a video BIOS hack, The hack did not

work and since I am not keen to mess with this further, let me hope 11.0 can make it all OK again.
What other recommendations can others give for a 'PnP', AGP or straight PCI card, capable of 3D, with its own on-board memory(256MB) and able to support 800x600 on a 19" CRT and possibly 1024x800 or 1680x1050 on the 22" Samsung 2232GW SynchMaster?
I recently had a 10.2 system here because its owner bought a 24" 1920x1200 HP panel at the same time his motherboard was dying and couldn't figure out what was happening. He left it here over a week while I got it a new motherboard. Before he picked it up, I got the HP to work at 1920x1200, but not with the first video card I tried, some kind of Radeon whose model I don't remember. No matter what I tried, selecting native 1920x1200 with the Radeon put the display into out of range sleep mode. Then I tried just about every other video card I have around here less than 10 years old, and they ALL ran 1920x1200 just fine. IIRC, the display didn't mind 1680x1050 either. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127317 is what the system left here with. Other cards that worked that I remember (some tested in 11.0b2 instead of 10.2): NVidia GeForce MX200 Matrox G400 Intel 845G (Dell GX260) Intel 815!!! O_O (Dell GX150) Some kind of non-Radeon ATI that I don't remember. IIRC, the HP worked via selection of a generic 1920x1200 panel because under HP in the vendor list in Sax2 it didn't exist. I later discovered the right model number illogically located under some other name listed right below HP, and it worked too. There ought to be a generic 1680x1050@60 in Sax2 that should work for you if its list omits your specific model. Seems to me you should be able to get it to work without an upgrade to 11.0. I don't know what the story with the 865G would be, but maybe there's a video BIOS update that could fix it.
