On your system I would use "zypper up" instead of yast for updating
software.
File an enhancement request for that.
I don't know what went wrong here - better file a bugreport,

Ok, on re-installation it went fine with the GUI and I left zypper in.
Also, the GUI YaST came up ok. Is zypper really a full requirement
now?(evidently removing it keeps a lot of stuff from
working.....*sigh* I hope it doesn't slow my system down. A P3/500
isn't the fastest.)
zypper is a requirement - and nothing like zmd. It's really fast and

Also, when I selected the repositories I wanted, the KDE and Mozilla
repos failed. And is it necessary to have all those prompts to say
yes to the PGP keys? Why not one dialog with a list of all of the
keys at one time? That was kinda annoying to have to wait and select
each one.
File an enhancement request for that.
Now it says:
Error: The metadata cache needs to be rebuilt for the 'Main
Repository (Non-OSS)' repository. You can run 'zypper refresh' as
root to do this.

I ran zypper refresh(which would be a bad thing for a new user to deal
with) and then selected "check now".
The updater now gave all the above errors in separate dialog boxes.
Are the repositories working?
