When I try to access files (e.g. cat text_file) shared through NFS server,
the operation is very slow. Is there a way to speed up the access?
Are you mounting via /etc/fstab or autofs?
man nfs will detail the possibilities for mounting tweaks applicable to both.
Specifically have a look at the rsize= and wsize= options.
Check that portmap is running on the client.
