Will try tonight and give feedback. Actually I have not even looked at
the 3d Effect. How would I check that it is working? Switching between
desktops?

Well... I have an 8600GT and it works perfectly using the nVidia binary
drivers.
I have a feeling it is something small :-)
Have you tested that OpenGL works? eg open a terminal and run
glxgears. Do you get a smooth animation? The fps (although NOT an
accurate fps value) should be around 8000 with a properly configured
8600GT if you leave the glxgears window at its default size.
In older versions of the nVidia drivers, the 3D thing was inaccurately
reported as not working by SAX2 although it was actually working fine.
I haven't ran SAX2 in a long time though.. not since nVidia started
providing the nvidia-settings tool... so I don't know if SAX2 still
reports 3D as disabled even though it is actually enabled.

Sorry to say but I don't have the version number with me. I can tellyou
that it did modify the xorg.conf as it asked me if I wanted to makefind
backup which I let it do. I will check the file tonight and let you
know. When I looked at this link
http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html I did not
the 8600 GT listed there.
