The drivers on the magazine is pretty recent(march 2008) and since I don't have internet access at home this might be my only route for the moment.
Ouch, no internet access? How do you survive? :-) The drivers on the DVD will likely be the basic binary drivers (ie not the RPMs built for SUSE). Installing them is not too hard. - copy the drivers off the DVD to somewhere easy to find.. for example your window manager Desktop - make sure you have gcc and the kernel sources installed (you can use YaST to do this) - log out of the window manager (Gnome, KDE etc) - switch to a terminal and log in as root (press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a terminal) - type init 3 - press Enter (to get your cursor back after init 3 finishes) - type cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup (not mandatory, but good practice to back up a working config before you start to install and change things) - type cd /home/your_username/Desktop - type ./Nvidia_driver_name (note the dot and slash at the beginning of that command) - this should launch the nVidia installer. It is generally safe to simply accept the defaults all the way through. It will offer to build the drivers (which is why you need gcc and the kernel sources installed), and as long as you don't get any fatal errors along the way, it should place the drivers in the right places, and update your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. - type init 5 (to restart X and restart your window manager)
Ok really dumb question how do I run SaX?
It's not a dumb question at all... - You can launch YaST and go to Hardware > Monitor (this starts SAX2) or - You can - log out of whatever window manager you are using - switch to a terminal and log in as root (press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch to a terminal) - type init 3 - press Enter (to get your cursor back after init 3 finishes) - type sax2 - tinker with the settings - assuming you find a setting that works, save and exit - type init 5 (to restart X and restart your window manager) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
