Not being a big believer in raid controllers (for smaller sized shops any way), just having a hot spare in your array will indicate the problem.
Most drives these days do have an onboard led for drive activity. After a failure and an automatic rebuild onto the hot spare the one not flickering with any system activity is the dead one. (and also the cold one if no lights are present).
Any disk cabinet which would allow a hot drive change will also have repeater lights where you can see them.
Even small shops with single servers running raid 1 can afford a third disk.

Question: I hear everyone speaking about the hotpugability of (good) hard raid controllers, but is it possible to hot plug a new SATA drive into a soft raid system? Are there motherboards that do not support hot plugging of SATA drives? For IDE it is probably impossible (IDE was not designed for it I belive) unless the hardware RAID controller would have special possibilities for it, I believe.
