I've had Kmail barf its layout once or twice over the years.
Settings / Configure Kmail /Appearance /
Layout tab.
Make sure Message Preview pain is checked.
Also on the General tab, uncheck use external editor.
Also, and probably most likely...
Look carefully at the divider between the message list and the
message structure. Is it TWO dividers, or one? When the TWO
dividers are dragged close to each other, they merge into ONE
and you can grab both of them together. Careful mouse work
will allow you to select one or the other.
If that fails, try reversing your selection for Message Structure
Viewer Placement on the above mentioned Appearance / Layout
tab.

Can someone help me understand the changed behavior of Kmail here?
At present, the Kmail window includes the Message List and the Message
Structure windows -- No Message window at all (moving the divider around does
not find a Message window).
I can view elements of the structure by choosing to Edit them, whicm brings
up
a detached window, but even an HTML part is displayed in plain text -- no
tags.
When the detached window closes, a dialog box appears, announcing that:
"Kmail
is unable to detect when the chosen editor is closed. To avoid data loss,
editting the attachment will be aborted". For the time being, Kmail is not
usable.
What is this all about?
