I've had Kmail barf its layout once or twice over the years.

Settings / Configure Kmail /Appearance /
Layout tab.
Make sure Message Preview pain is checked.
Also on the General tab, uncheck use external editor.

Also, and probably most likely...
Look carefully at the divider between the message list and the
message structure.  Is it TWO dividers, or one?  When the TWO
dividers are dragged close to each other, they merge into ONE
and you can grab both of them together.  Careful mouse work
will allow you to select one or the other.

If that fails, try reversing your selection for Message Structure
Viewer Placement on the above mentioned Appearance / Layout
tab.
