[opensuse] Trying to use UMTSmon to connect to Internet through a cell phone: serial errors

I'm using openSuSE 10.3 on a laptop (IBM T43 thinkpad if it matters).
I just signed up for the AT&T (formerly Cingular) unlimited data plan. I want
to be able to access the Internet through my cell phone while traveling.
I know this is possible but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do it.
I got it to work through a bluetooth connection from my Macintosh (OS X 10.4)
and it works really good. Now if I can just get openSuSE to do the same
thing.
I have used a program called "GPRS easy connect" a few years ago and it
worked, but unfortunately that program is no longer maintained.
Looking on the SuSE wiki I found references to "umtsmon". It looks like a
pretty good program but I'm having some trouble with it. I gave up (for now)
trying to use a Bluetooth connection to the phone from linux ("no host"
problems with rfcomm0). Today I bought the Nokia USB data cable. It's a Nokia
6555 phone, brand new, supports "3G" though currently where I'm located right
now there's only "Edge" and old gprs.
I found that after I went into the phone's settings under Connectivity > USB
Data Cable and moved the setting from "Music Sync" to "Nokia Mode" that the
phone then showed up on Linux as /dev/ttyACM0.
I tried launching umtsmon like this (as root):
umtsmon -v 5 -s /dev/ttyACM0
I tried to setup a profile, it seemed to work. I told it to search for
available wireless networks, and it found "AT&T GPRS" all on it's own, which
I assume is an encouraging sign that it was able to make the cell phone do
something - maybe not, I don't know.
I've been able to work through most problems but I am finally stuck at this
error, I get it in the umts log window and also in /var/log/messages:
Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyACM0
Serial line is looped back.
Connection terminated.
Does anyone know what this "Serial line is looped back" error means, and what
I can do about it?
I did try a google search, lots of confusing info out there. One thing that
doesn't help is that I cannot figure out where umtsmon is saving it's config
file, I can't find it in /etc, and I can't find it under ~/.-anything.
Thanks,
JW
